ATAGI has recommended an additional COVID-19 vaccine booster before winter for at risk populations including:
- Adults aged 65 and older
- Residents of aged care and disability care facilities
- People aged 16 and over with severe immunocompromise
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 and older
The additional booster can be given 4 months after the first booster or 4 months after a confirmed SARS-Cov-2 infection if the infection occurred since the first COVID-19 booster dose.
This additional dose will be offered from April 2022 and can be co-administered with influenza vaccine.
Comirnaty (Prizer) or Spikevax (Moderna) are the preferred vaccines for COVID-19 booster doses.
Vaxzeveria (AstraZenica) can be used when an mRNA vaccine is contraindicated.
Nuvaxovid (Novavax) can be used if no other COVIC-19 vaccine is considered suitable.
